Coaching Staff
Nic Eriksson Head Coach
Coach Nic brings a wealth of experience to the YMCA Seahorse Swim Team, having spent five years as the Associate Head Coach at Queens University of Charlotte. During his time at Queens, he directly coached Slovakian Olympian Matej Dusa for the 2024 Summer Olympics and prepared four U.S. swimmers for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials. Under his guidance, Queens University secured four NCAA National Titles between 2021 and 2023.
 
Before his tenure at Queens, Coach Nic was a lead coach at SwimMAC Carolina, recognized as the nation’s top club team. Over four years at SwimMAC, he coached across all levels, from the elite Senior group to the 10-and-under Marlin Group. He also had the opportunity to work alongside esteemed U.S. Olympic Coach David Marsh, further solidifying his expertise in developing swimmers of all ages and abilities.
 
Prior to coaching, Coach Nic swam and studied at Queens University of Charlotte. As a captain, he led the team to a National Championship in 2015. As a swimmer, he qualified for 3 Olympic trials, 2012/2016/2020 and was a apart of a US National Champion Relay in 2014. He grew up swimming on a small club in Indianapolis, IN. 
 
Coach Nic's wife swam on YSST when she was younger and they have a dog, Cleo, and a cat, Mimi. 
 
 
Rachael LeClair Assistant Coach

Coach LeClair joined the YSST coaching staff in January 2009.  Rachael swam competitively for 12 years with the Mid-Ohio Valley Swim Association, Parkway Swim Club, Tulane University and Emory University.  She was a Senior National qualifier, a 21 time NCAA All-American, 2 time NCAA Division III individual champion, former Division III record holder, and was Georgia Hall of Fame Amateur Athlete of the Year.  When she is not at the pool, Rachael practices family law and criminal defense law.  She and her husband Tommy Shores have two daughters, Maly and Audrey, and a son, Peter.

Ann Taylor Assistant Coach

Coach Taylor swam competitively for the North Canton YMCA in Ohio for 11 years, then swam for Ohio Northern University.  She was the first Ohio Northern swimmer ever to qualify for Nationals in an individual event (200 Fly).  Ann helped coach the Morganton Swim Club for 2 1/2 years before joining the YSST staff.  She works in the hospital system as a pharmacist, and currently resides in Granite Falls with her husband Christopher, and their four children - Logan, Marissa, Ryanna, and Kayana.  Kayana currently swims for YSST.  Ann coaches the Gold Group.

Cathy Hitchcock Assistant Coach

Cathy grew up in Hickory and swam for HSST from 1978-1988.  She continued her swimming career as a four time All-ACC swimmer at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.  She also qualified for the 1992 US Olympic trials in the 200 backstroke.  She served assistant coaching stints at the North Carolina Aquatic Club (1994-1995), Davidson College (1996-1997), University of Kansas (1997-2000), and then as the Head Coach of the University of Kansas women's team (2000-2002).  In 2002, Cathy moved back to Hickory and began teaching at Northview Middle School.  In May of 2011, Cathy was inducted into the Catawba County Sports Hall of Fame.  In addition to coaching YSST, she is the Head Coach of the Hickory High swim team.  Cathy's children, Drew and Ella Brett are both members of YSST.  

Jessica Flowers Assistant Coach

Coach Jessica Flowers has been a swim instructor at the YMCA of Catawba Valley for the past 9 years. She is a former YSST swimmer who swam competitively for 14 years. During her swimming career at YSST, she was a YMCA National Qualifier (100 and 200 backstroke) for both short and long course. She continued her swimming career at Pfeiffer University, and held a record for the 100 backstroke. During her time at Pfeiffer she took on a leadership role as club coach for three years of her swim team. In addition to being a swim coach, Jessica is also a Full time Preschool teacher. She and her husband Zach have an 85 pound fur baby named Bishop who still thinks he’s a puppy. Jessica coaches the Silver Group.

Maryia Johnson Assistant Coach

Maryia joined the YSST coaching staff in April of 2021.  She is originally from Belarus, where she first started to swim competitively. Maryia moved to the United States twenty years ago. In 2003, she started at the YMCA in Conover as a water aerobic and swimming instructor. From 2006 to 2020, she was an assistant coach for the CVAC swim team. The last eight years Maryia has also worked at fitness plus located at Catawba medical center where she has a program for new swimmers as young as 6 months and older. Maryia and her husband have two daughters, ages 7 and 9, and they live in Conover.
